The existing emergency refill prescription regulations (GA Law 26-4-80 (7))limits refills to a 72 hours supply. This means insulin cannot be refilled, as it does not come in such a small dose. The goal is to extend this limit to 30 days in order to allow insulin and other life sustaining medications to be dispensed in emergency situations when a doctor cannot be reached.
Why is this important?
I am a Type 1 Diabetic, so I know firsthand how important insulin is, because without it I would die. Access to insulin is critical, but the limitations on refills have resulted in hospitalization and even death of individuals with Type 1 Diabetes.
