Amendment to the Constitution
This is a proposed Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America.
1st There needs to be a change to our constitution with the Election Day. The first Tuesday after the first of November is not a sound choice. It needs to be later so that there is no need or purpose of a lame duck congress. This election would be after both houses of congress had abjured for the year. Let’s make it sometime in December. People should have an entire weekend to vote. That’s Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This would help get more voters to have time to vote and may increase voter turnout.
2nd We need to change elections so that large amounts of cash are not needed to run. Campaign Finance Reform is needed to get big money out of elections. Limiting the amount of money each candidate has for their campaign can help to level the field so that each candidate has an equal chance.
3rd Running for congress every two years is a poor way to run the house, making continence of deliberation a problem and money required a constant chore. Make a term of each house member three years so that some members would be present for a new congress. Stager the 435 members currently in the house so that half would be up for reelection in two years (217) and the rest in three(218). This would make the Mid-term elections different. There would be no nationwide election of all the house members. It would make elections for some house members on off years when no other federal offices were being contested. Once the first group completes their two year term, their new terms would be for three years. House seats would be half of a senate seat.
4th Term limit each congressman and senator to a maximum of twelve years. This to encourage new people’s ideas to address our nations needs. If presidents are limited to eight years, then member of the house and senate should be limited too.
These ideas are bold but I think they are needed to change the structure to make our government function and help to make debate of ideas work again.
