To: Governor Charlie Baker
Appoint Marisa DeFranco for Interim Senator
To: The Honorable Deval Patrick
Governor of The Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Selecting Marisa DeFranco as the interim Senator to fill John Kerry’s seat until an election can be held would be a most courageous, wise and appropriate appointment for the people of Massachusetts.
Marisa DeFranco was the only candidate in the Massachusetts U.S. Senate race last year, out of a field of six candidates, who had the courage to go the distance to give the people of Massachusetts a real choice and a real opportunity to hear about many issues in a grass roots campaign. She and her volunteers collected more than 14,600 certified signatures (10,000 were required). Marisa DeFranco ran a clean money and true grassroots campaign. Despite the hard work and substantive contributions made by Marisa and dedicated volunteers, she was denied ballot access not by the voters, but by a miniscule number of members of the Democratic state party at a real circus of a state convention (I know, I was there) who believed it was just fine to deny the rest of the electorate the opportunity to participate in the actual democratic process by having a choice at the ballot box in a genuine primary race.
Marisa DeFranco, an attorney with 17+ years of experience, is an expert in immigration law, an issue that President Obama has made a top priority. Even in a brief stint in the Senate Marisa could provide real insight and solutions to the overhaul sought in immigration system. Marisa is the only candidate who has been willing to criticize her own party for its vague dabs at reform while it backs so-called free trade agreements that undercut real immigration reform.
To meet Marisa is to know immediately that not only will she bring a rare energy and much needed breath of fresh air to the Senate but also an expert voice to the immigration discussion.
