Arizona Governor Ducey: Appoint Cindy McCain to Replace Her Husband John McCain in the U.S. Senate
Victory! The creator of this petition declared the campaign a success. You can still sign the petition to show support.
Dear Arizona Governor Doug Ducey,
Out of respect for the life and legacy of Senator John McCain, we strongly urge you to appoint Cindy McCain to be his replacement in the U.S. Senate.
As a Democrat my adult life reconsidering becoming a registered Independent, I have long respected former Senator John McCain for his ability to work with other legislators to see bipartisan solutions to our Nation’s problems. And his bipartisan leadership has inspired me in recent years to work with Republicans in San Francisco on a bipartisan basis.
Many people, myself included, strongly believe that the best choice for you to appoint to fill Senator McCain’s seat is his wife, Cindy McCain. She’s smart, and very politically astute in her own right. She would be a great pick to replace her husband. And clearly, she has the money and financial backing to mount her own re-election campaign beyond 2020.
Mr. McCain clearly represented the pragmatic wing of the Republican party, and he did so with honor and dignity. McCain was one of Arizona’s and America’s most towering political figures. His successor should be someone who will honor his legacy and follow in his giant footsteps. Cindy McCain is the logical choice to be John’s successor.
As Arizona’s governor, your top priority, Mr. Ducey, should not be to appoint somebody who is unwaveringly loyal to our current president. You should appoint someone who is unwaveringly loyal to Arizona, the U.S., and to the U.S. Constitution who will place country over party, as Mr. McCain most likely hoped you would do. Your job, Governor, is not to protect the back of our sitting president, or somebody who will not pursue impeachment of the incumbent President. Your job is to appoint someone who will protect the backs of Arizonans and protect the back of the United States itself.
Since you have joked that you are “a former ice cream salesman,” Governor, you must surely know Arizona’s broader electorate are more favorably inclined to Mr. McCain’s center-right politics. By appointing Cindy McCain as her husband’s successor, you would not need to sell much ice cream to mend fences with Arizona teachers in your bid for re-election in November. By appointing a woman — John’s wife Cindy — your own approval ratings would likely soar you to re-election, earning you great respect all across the nation!
Instead of picking a mediocre appointee who may not be very good for Arizonans, you have the opportunity to appoint a stellar appointee by choosing Cindy McCain.
Please ignore political pundits’ advice that you need pro-Trump voters to win re-election in November, Governor. First, those voters are wrong that Mrs. McCain would be too politically moderate; after all John McCain voted fairly consistently to support many of Mr. Trump’s policy initiatives. Nobody could claim that John McCain was “politically moderate.” Second, one day soon, Trump will be relegated to the dust-bin of history, and his voters will vanish in a cloud of smoke.
You should pick someone dedicated to country over party that John McCain always displayed; Cindy is that person!
McCain won his re-election to the U.S. Senate by 53.7% of the vote in November 2016. Prior to that, in the primary election leading up to the general election, he won by a 12.5% over his Republican challenger Kelli Ward (winning 51.7% to 37.2% in the primary).
As for Trump, he beat Hillary Clinton for president in Arizona by just a 3.6% spread. My sense is that Arizona Republican voters and independent voters would strongly support you in your November re-election bid if you chose to appoint Mrs. McCain to her husband’s seat. That would probably earn you more voters than the pro-Trump voters in Arizona.
Do the honorable thing here, Governor Ducey. Appoint Cindy to replace her beloved John! By doing so, you’ll become another American hero, putting country above your own political ambitions, and you’ll also become a model for all Americans. Do the right thing. Appoint Cindy!

Why is this important?
I’m starting this petition hoping to convince Arizona Governor Doug Ducey that he should appoint John McCain’s wife, Cindy, to replace John McCain as U.S. Senator from Arizona.
