Sec. 512 of P.L.111-24, effective on February 22, 2010, makes it legal to carry firearms in National Parks. Yet most rangers do not carry firearms and it is still illegal to hunt in most National Parks. This law encourages wildlife poaching and increased destruction of historic or cultural resources. Further, no longer are natural predators the biggest threat to personal safety. That distinction now belongs to human beings.
Overturn this law and allow our National Parks to once again be enjoyed without the inherent danger that comes with firearms.
Why is this important?
Our National Parks should serve as a respite where visitors can feel safe and secure while enjoying a natural experience. Increased levels of violence against park rangers and visitors, coupled with the destruction of National Park resources, dictates this short-sighted law be reviewed and overturned.
