Ban GMOs in Oregon

The Oregon Department of Agriculture approved 2,500 acres for genetically modified canola seed to be planted. Since, the Oregon Department of Agriculture has approved genetically modified canola, which is in the family of brassicaceae, this mean the GMO canola seed can cross pollinate with mustard, broccoli, kohlrabi, cabbage, kale, brussels sprouts, cauliflower etc. When a GMO crop cross pollinates with a conventional crop, it makes the conventional seed sterile. None of our citizens will be able to save their own seeds from the brassicaceae family- The canola seed that is a genetically modified organism and it will make for sterile seeds in all living organisms in that family. If Oregon allows this to happen, we are allowing Oregonians to lose the right to feed themselves. If Oregonians cannot save seed, because of farmers deciding to plant GMOs, that means to many of us that GMOs are infringing on our rights to grow food, farm, and to save seed. As Oregonian we are extremely upset with our government approving the 2,500 acres to be grown in an open environment. We do not need them for the healthy production of food. Please know that as your constituents, we want to ban GMOs and expect our elected officials to start pursing our needs. Oregonians want a ban on GMOs and we want to retain the rights to save seeds.

Why is this important?

Oregon Department of Agriculture has approved 2,500 acres of GMO canola in the Willamette Valley. Many Oregonian are upset and want their voice to be heard on the subject. That is why I created this petition, as simple reminder for all our elected officials that Oregonians want to ban GMOs.
