We have warmed the planet 0.8 degrees already.
If we stop output of carbon right now there will still be 0.8 degree warming from previously released emissions.
Ban the combustion engine by 2016, ask for worldwide cooperation now.
Why is this important?
Emitting 565 more gigatons of carbon dioxide by 2050 will put us at a 2 degree higher temperature globally, we will actually emit that much carbon in 16 years, by 2028.
This 2 degree change is "... a prescription for long-term disaster." according to NASA scientist James Hansen, the planet's most prominent climatologist.
There are 5x more fossil fuel reserves than are needed to reach the critical 2 degree overheat level, 10x if it is 1 degree. These reserves are worth $27 trillion.
Corporations and drivers will not stop voluntarily. This issue will not fix itself.
