Be brave, don't cave

President Obama,

You're beginning to sound like Mitt “Flip-flop” Romney. You've been saying Social Security and Medicare are off the table. Suddenly, you're again willing to betray your support base.

It's not a cliff, it's a bluff. The people you are making this deal with are playing killer poker with chips made of coal ash. The thing about coal ash is, it doesn't hold together. What they are offering you will happen anyway, come December 31. The Bush tax cuts were skewed, and amounted to welfare for the wealthy. Call their bluff!

The other things that will expire can be revisited in January. You'll have a somewhat more cooperative legislature then, again thanks to grassroots action. It's not as though taxes were due on January 1.

The so-called “chained CPI” is just a euphemism for cutting benefits that we the workers of America have earned and paid for in good faith. It's plain theft. Raising the age of eligibility would cause unnecessary deaths. Older workers have a hard enough time staying employed from 50 to 65; many would not survive another two years.

This approach to reducing the deficit, which many economists advise against at this time anyway, is like putting band-aids on a scrape while ignoring a hemorrhage in the form of a bloated military budget and years of welfare to the wealthy and corporations.

No deal is better than a bad deal. Resist the scare tactics. Be brave, don't cave.

Why is this important?
