California, let's make "Election Day" a State Holiday

By establishing that the first Tuesday following the first Monday in the month of November, of even numbered years, be recognized as an official California State Holiday, we will re-dedicate ourselves to strengthening democracy, and expanding the opportunity to vote for all Californians. Establishing "Election Day" as a State holiday will empower more citizens to participate and enable the greatest level of civic engagement, providing the means for our 37.2 million voices the opportunity to cast their ballots unencumbered, and free from the rigors and stress of a normal workday.

Why is this important?

In order to further strive for a more perfect Union, the State of California intends to strengthen voter participation and honor our constitutionally given right, by enshrining the day we participate in our most sacred civic duty. By acknowledging the importance of voting as the very foundation of a healthy democracy, and actively safeguard election days solely for that purpose, ensuring that all registered citizens who wish to participate will have an entire day to do so, with the least possible obstacles or disincentives.
