The National Climate Assessment predicts we will have many more catastrophic weather events due to climate change and almost 1,000 inmates were left to die in Louisiana’s Orleans Parish Prison during hurricane Katrina. California prisons must be required to have weather and climate related evacuation plans in place for all inmates or be subject to state oversight and control until a plan is created.
Why is this important?
We have seen the devastation caused by fires, floods, droughts, and all manner of catastrophic weather already and we know there are many more on the way. Prisoners in state custody deserve our protection and California will be on the front lines of climate change in the US so it is our duty to protect those who can’t protect themselves.
