Candidate Accountability & Truth in Politics

The First Amendment states clearly, “Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech.” However, the freedom of speech should not include false statements, misleading conjecture, or outright lies to get elected into public office. Any candidate knowingly using lies, misleading conjecture or false statements should result in the immediate dismissal from their elected office. Further, any candidate who knowingly fails to correct supporters that use lies, misleading conjecture or false statements during an election also forfeits their elected position. Additionally, any candidate found to have knowingly lied during a campaign shall be disqualified from running for the same office for the period of two election cycles. Once removed from office, the runner-up candidate will be placed in office for a probationary period allowing for that candidate to be evaluated by the electorate. This is no different from any federal employee applying for a federal job. Politicians should be treated equally to federal employees applying for any federal position.

Why is this important?

This petition levels the playing field, by holding politicians accountable for the things they say during an election. If candidates knowingly lie to the voters, they are removed from office.
