Congress should provide greater funding and authority to the U.S. Dept of the Interior and the EPA to locate, catalog, and clean up abandoned hard rock mining sites in Colorado. Special interests should be restricted from overruling Superfund site designations.
Why is this important?
This addresses a set of concerns raised by the recent spill into the Animas River.
As a resident downstream from historical mining sites, I have some concern that my family and community may face future similar threats. As a resident in the region, I anticipate negative impacts on the local economy and on one of my favorite watersheds in the state.
I am concerned about future similar events if the EPA is inadequately funded.
