We should not be honoring a man whose lust for wealth and power resulted in the murder of indigenous people. If we have moved past empire and colonialism, our calendar should reflect that.
Why is this important?
This is a change that is long overdue. Many indigenous people have already made the holiday their own. Changing consciousness requires changes in syntax.
