Change north high schools tardy policy
The new tardy policy is ruining the environment of north high school. Not only is it punishing students who may not have a viable means of transportation, it’s taking away our means of communication with family.
Students who do not have a consistent way of getting to school are going to be greatly affected by this policy. It’s indirectly targeting students who may have to take a 45+ minute bus ride to school. Students have zero ways of controlling if their bus will come on time and if it will make any connecting stops on time.
The 1st and 2nd periods tardy sweeps are harmful to everyone at north, And is punishing those who don’t need to be punished. It is unjust to punish students who’s families cannot afford to get a car, and students who may not have both parents around to drive them.
Taking away phones for the whole day/multiple days due to tardys is also removing their means of getting home. If a student who used RTD cannot get home because the school is withholding their ways of knowing how to get home. it not only causes dangerous situations for the student, but also causes an issue for the parents who may not be able to afford to take a day off of work to get the students phone back.
The entire tardy policy is coming from a place of privilege, 95% of teachers, deans, and administrators have a consistent way of getting to school, And targeting students who don’t proves that the system that is currently in place is not being used to better our education, but to make the school look better.
Principal Echevarría has a consistent way of getting to school on time and is it unjust for him to force this policy on us when he cannot relate to us.
Why is this important?
Students are constantly being criticized and called out in front of the whole class by our teachers, over something they cannot control. The only way a student can feel safe within norths walls is by being understood by our educators.
Signing this petition proves that this policy needs to be changed for the betterment of the north community and the safety of the students.

How it will be delivered
When this petition reaches 300 signatures we plan to get a meeting with principal Echevarria to hopefully change this policy in a way that can help all students!
