Change the Penal System

Something is so wrong with our penal system. Our system is focused on punishment rather than correction. Even though they call prisons correctional institutions, all they do is make better criminals. There has to be a better way where the criminals are encouraged to show remorse and find ways to "redeem" themselves. The criminal could be offered options of individual and group therapy, education, classes to develop strength in their health, their relationships and how they financially can support themselves. It is also important to offer options to find a connection to their Higher Source in a non-denominational way and where the victims are worked with as well. The focus would be on healing, on feeling safe, and on feeling recognized by the victimizer as a human being with feelings and the need to hear "I'm sorry" in the realist of ways. We would have to start with the newest criminals but finding new ways to deal with violence is critical to our future. Get the violence off the TV. We are dehumanizing ourselves via the media. Making very violent acts everyday fodder for young minds. There are people out there and resources that could be brought together to change the way we handle crimes. Please for the sake of our children's future, bring them together for a Summit on Correction.Send in your names and your ideas.

Why is this important?

Prison statistics are daunting. The United States has the highest documented incarceration rate in the world. At year-end 2009 it was 743 adults incarcerated per 100,000 population. Something's not working. Something needs to change.
