Change WV Medicaid Eligibility for Assisted Living for Dementia Patients

Many families choose smaller assisted living facilities to provide care for their loved ones with dementia. These facilities provide a safe, home-like environment; however, it comes at a price... private pay and/or other sources. When a patient’s money runs out, families are forced to institutionalize their loved ones in skilled nursing facilities because the state of West Virginia will not permit Medicaid payments to assisted living facilities.

Why is this important?

My mother is a retired school teacher with Alzheimer’s disease. Because of her condition, she needs constant supervision. After much consideration for my mother’s care and safety, I found it necessary to place her in an assisted living facility. Imagine the “sticker shock” that I experienced about the prices of assisted living vs. nursing home care!! I chose a small assisted living facility that specializes in dementia care.

I have made a great family of friends at the facility. However, some of the residents are running out of money and after years in assisted living will be forced to move into nursing homes. I, too have this fear.

WV Medicaid needs to help our dementia families get the specialized care that they truly deserve!! Let’s face it, none of us are getting any younger and we might need the State’s help someday! Let’s make a change and speak up, West Virginia 💜
