Charge $ per plastic and paper bags

Tax all bags, both paper and plastic. Disposable bags make up 10 percent of all trash that fills our landfills. Disposable bags should each cost at least 10 CENTS per bag. We would make our city and this earth a cleaner and greener place by doing so. I am proposing this step towards LIMITING all bags. Plastic and paper bags are totally and fully wasteful. On my two block walk to the market, I can always find at least 4 bags floating down the block or clung to a fence or swamped in a puddle of water. Upon buying my groceries (no matter what quantity), I am allowed to take as many bags as I please to carry my 1 or 20 items. On my walk home from the market I can easily find MORE than 4 bags floating down the street. This is a problem. It signifies the wastefulness of our culture. The good news is that we can change this! I have not touched a plastic bag in more than 2 years. I simply carry my canvas shopping bag to the market. It is that easy! I look at others who don’t tote their own canvas bags and I think how wasteful they are. Even if they recycle the plastic bags, it requires energy and time and resources to recycle plastic bags. Why not choose to forego them altogether, as I have? Please do sign this petition if you vow to NOT EVER USE PLASTIC/PAPER BAGS and would like to see a FEE per each PAPER OR PLASTIC BAG.

Why is this important?

While I did sign the petition to BAN plastic bags, I am proposing a step towards LIMITING all bags. Plastic and paper bags are totally and fully wasteful. This city could take a positive step towards putting bags (both plastic and paper) on the path towards EXTINCTION. NYC should CHARGE $ per plastic and paper bags! I personally do not touch both paper and plastic bags. I just chuck a reusable canvas bag in the backpack that is with me all the time. This IS something that NYC can do.
