Cities: Cut Your ICE Contracts
Local officials must take action now to protect our immigrant neighbors by cutting harmful contracts with ICE. These 287(g) agreements deputize local police to enforce federal immigration law, leading to racial profiling, wrongful arrests, and families being torn apart over minor infractions.
Why is this important?
No one should fear being torn from their family over a minor traffic stop, but that’s exactly what these contracts are enabling across the country. In May, 19-year-old Georgia college student and DACA recipient Ximena Arias Cristóbal, who’s lived in the U.S. since the age of 4, was wrongfully arrested and detained for weeks under her county’s 287(g) agreement with ICE after being pulled over for a minor traffic infraction.
This is the terrifying reality facing millions of families under Trump’s mass deportation plan. Today, ICE has more than 700 of these agreements in 40 states—a more than 419% increase since Trump took office. These recent expansions open the door for even more racial profiling and wrongful detentions, enabling local police, often with little to no immigration training, to decide who gets turned over to ICE.
Our local officials and city councils must protect our immigrant neighbors from being funneled into Trump’s deportation machine. Will you sign the petition demanding that local cities cut their contracts with ICE?
