City Of Duluth: We need to talk about the Husky Energy Explosion

We the undersigned respectfully request that our elected officials of the City of Duluth arrange a community forum to discuss the accidents that occurred at the Husky Energy Oil Refinery in Superior WI which nearly released a toxic gas that had the potential to kill and injure over 100,000 people in the surrounding area. We are calling on people to come together and have a real democratic discussion about the type of energy we want in our community and whether or not it is worth the dangers when we have safer energy alternatives available.

Many in our community want to know what measures are being taken to monitor the quality of air, water, and earth in the vicinity of the accident. People also want to know what if any possible harm to human health can be expected from exposure to soot and smoke.

Additionally, we the undersigned would like our city resources used to evaluate the dangers posed to our community by fossil fuel infrastructure and consider taking action to mitigate them. Are there safer energy alternatives, and if so should we move on from energy that explodes and pollutes in the manner that petroleum industries can?

Please, help the people of our community better understand what happened and have a say in whether or not we continue to be exposed to these types of dangers.

Why is this important?

On April 27th at the Husky Energy Refinery in Superior, a series of explosions and fires put the citizens of Superior and surrounding communities at great risk of being exposed to toxic substances, including the possibility of releasing a stored fluoride chemical into the atmosphere in a high enough volume that it could kill over 100,000 people, according to estimates by scientists.

In the wake of this event, the Mayors of Duluth and Superior called for the discontinuation of the use of Fluoride at that facility. I am hoping this petition can help inspire our elected officials and our community as a whole to use resources to have a real conversation about the dangers posed to our community by fossil fuel infrastructures such as pipelines and refineries.
