Close the SUV fuel economy loophole

Treat cars and SUVs the same. Buyers who choose large, fuel-hungry SUVs should be subject to the same gas-guzzler tax as car buyers.

Why is this important?

For two decades now, automakers have pushed highly-profitable large SUVs and sharply reduced or eliminated wagon variations of popular small- and midsized cars. Due to a loophole in the decades-old EPA regulations, these SUVs are classified as "commercial" vehicles and are exempt from the "gas guzzler" tax that is imposed upon cars that get poor fuel economy.

We are calling on Congress to level the playing field. Hold SUVs to the same standard as passenger cars, because they are used the same way. Consumers who choose to buy low fuel economy SUVs should be subject to the same tax a car buyer pays for choosing a car that uses excess fuel.
