The issue is simple: companies like Monsanto and Calgene are spending vast sums of money to prevent you from knowing if the foods you consume every day contain some form of genetic modification. The validity of the concerns regarding the consumption of GM foods may be challenged ( we don't know, much of the research done has been short term and sponsored by, you guessed it, Monsanto). What must not be challenged, however, is the right of every consumer to KNOW when a GMO has been included in a food source. A perfect example is the innocent little soybean-- read your labels, some form of soy makes an appearance in almost everything. As of 2013, roughly 85% of corn, 91% of soybeans, and 88% of cotton produced in the United States are genetically modified. Stand up for your right to know.
Why is this important?
We are a nation with problems. One of these problems lies in the ability of corporations like Monsanto to throw vast sums of money at Congress to bend the law to fit an underhanded scheme. Tell Congress that we have had enough- consumers deserve the right to know if what they are eating contains under-researched GM food substances-- after all, it is your right to know what you put in your body.
