Congress: Rein in Trump's unconstitutional military action
Since September, the Trump administration has killed at least 64 people in the Caribbean in 15 military strikes. The administration claims they are fighting drug cartels, but they’ve provided zero public evidence that any of these boats carried narcotics or that anyone on board had cartel ties. No trials. No charges. No proof. No congressional oversight.
Trump has declared an “armed conflict” against alleged cartels without congressional authorization in defiance of the Constitution's decree that only Congress can declare war. Last month, the Senate voted down a war powers resolution that would have stopped these strikes. Trump won’t stop unless we make Congress act.
Congress must rein in Trump’s unconstitutional military strikes and demand transparency and due process NOW.
Why is this important?
No president should have unchecked power to kill without evidence, trials, or congressional oversight. This administration has labeled these 64 victims “unlawful combatants" to justify killing them without trial. Only three people have survived these strikes. Survivors were briefly detained, then returned to their home country without any charges. If the administration had evidence these were cartel members aiming to bring drugs into the U.S., why didn’t they charge the survivors?
By declaring unilateral “armed conflict” without congressional authorization, Trump is claiming he can do whatever he wants and harm whomever he wants—bypassing both Congress and the courts to do so.
Some members of Congress have introduced a war powers resolution aimed at preventing continued strikes without congressional approval, but last month the Senate voted the resolution down in a 48-51 vote. We need to show Congress that we are paying attention and demand they act.
