Federal and State Congressmen, being in the service of the citizens of the United States, are publicly elected officials - and should not receive an extraordinary salary in comparison to the working class.
The benefits received from holding public office - supported by lobbyists, political parties, and campaigning - should be more than enough to compensate for a nation-wide pay cut of members of the Congress. As highly unlikely at it is that the White House and Congress will pass the due legislation - even if every voting member of the population were to sign this petition - we propose that all Federal congressmen earn a yearly salary equal to the average U.S. household salary for the previous year, and that all State congressmen earn a yearly salary equal to the average household salary for the state for the previous year.
Why is this important?
It is overdue, to remind our representatives on Capitol Hill, that they are in our service - and that as citizens, we are not in theirs. For years, our current political parties and their candidates have failed us in fostering economic development, making unbiased decisions of policy, and in uniting the nation. Not a single political figure should be able to live a more financially stable life than members of the middle class, let alone the working class, when in service to the American people. Let alone, when they do not operate in service to the American people, but rather only to themselves.
