To: Mr. Rushern Baker, III, County Executive
County Executive Baker: Please come to the rescue of the animals and people of Prince George's C...
In 2010 you promised to "get the right people working at the shelter" because we were "killing too many animals". You mentioned several important changes that you promised to make. Since then, every measure of performance has declined, while more and more other jurisdictions are saving 90% and more of intake. We are also exporting many more of our valuable pets to outside of the county. It's PAST TIME to keep your promise for a change in leadership
Why is this important?
The performance of Prince George's County's Animal Management Division has been held up as a bad example at national conferences on animal sheltering. An increasing number of our pets are being exported outside of the county to non-profit organizations while the adoption rate has remained flat at about 10% for decades. Residents of the county avoid use of the facility in spite of the brand new building, consequently the compliance rate for licensing (and certification of rabies vaccination) is about 8%. This puts residents of our county at risk. The present trajectory is not acceptable or sustainable. It's time for the change that was promised.
