It concerns me that schools in the USA are discontinuing the teaching of cursive writing. That means that those who do not learn this skill will never be able to read original historical documents, such as The Constitution.
Several years ago, while working with ESOL students in Florida, a second grader showed me his first grade notebook from Cuba. His assignments were neatly written in cursive. I noticed that rather than teach block letters, they taught the cursive alphabet, with loops and tails, making the transition
from printing to cursive natural.
Stop dumbing down our students--it would be a shame, if one day only archaeologists (& Cubans) could read cursive writing.
Why is this important?
Let's stop dumbing down our students, by eliminating yet another skill. It would be a shame, if one day only archaeologists had an understanding of cursive writing.
