Defend Pell Grants for Americans
Pell grants allow Americans of all socioeconomic backgrounds the opportunity for a college education that will maintain the competitiveness of America's workforce and allow access to the middle class for those not fortunate enough to be born into it. The working class of America has been hit hardest by this recession and the appropriate response is not to shrink a program that allows parents to see a better future for their children. Education is the most vital investment we can make to ensure the continued prominence of American business and innovation. We demand that you remove the more onerous requirements for Pell grants and support the efforts of Americans from low income families to obtain a college education.
Why is this important?
House Republicans want to strip away Pell grants for students as college tuition costs are rising around the country. By making eligibility requirements for Pell Grants more stringent, they look to undermine an important vehicle for social mobility in order to avoid raising another cent in revenues from the wealthy. This is the real class warfare.
