The US Supreme Court recently ruled that corporations are eligible for the freedoms permitted individuals saying that because corporations are groups of individuals, the corporate form must receive the same free speech privileges as individual citizens.
Today that same Court ruled that organizations, likewise groups of individuals, cannot be sued for damages under the Torture Victim Protection Act (TVPA) . The issue arose in the case of a US citizen who died while being questioned by security officials on the West Bank.
"No one, we hazard to guess, refers in normal parlance to an organization as an 'individual,'" Justice Sotomayor said.

Why is this important?
The US Supreme Court has granted organizations the same rights as individuals while refusing to hold them responsible for the most heinous of crimes, torture, in the same manner it would hold a human person accountable for the same behavior.
