For the safety of the corn allergy population, demand that the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI) remove the following potentially life-threatening claim from their website:
"Most corn-derived products, like cornstarch and high-fructose corn syrup, do not contain corn protein. If you have a corn allergy, you do not need to avoid these products."
Why is this important?
I am personally allergic to corn and can attest to the fact that cornstarch and high fructose corn syrup cause me to experience a severe allergic reaction; therefore, their statement is false, misleading, and endangers the lives of the corn allergy population. Many other published articles confirm that removing a food protein does not guarantee that an allergen is rendered hypoallergenic.
