Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee: Donate the $33,400 from Martin Shkreli to charity

Martin Shkreli, the hedge fund manager and Turing Pharmaceuticals owner who claimed that raising the price of Daraprim, a medication used to treat toxoplasmosis, a medical condition that can be fatal for people with AIDS, from $13.50/pill to a whopping $750/pill would be a "great thing for society", donated $33,400 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC).

In light of Shkreli's overt greed and attacks against those who oppose price-gouging in the prescription drug industry, we, the signatories of this petition, call for the DSCC to donate $33,400 to charity.

Why is this important?

Recently, Turing Pharmaceuticals announced that it had raised the price of the drug Daraprim from $13.50 per pill to a staggering $750 per pill, representing a nearly 5,556% increase in price. Daraprim is used to treat toxoplasmosis, a medical condition that can be fatal for people with AIDS and developing fetuses.

Turing Pharamceuticals's owner is hedge fund manager Martin Shkreli. After being rightfully criticized over Turing's decision to increase the price of Daraprim, Shkreli has taken to social media and openly attacked progressives and other critics of the Daraprim price increase.

According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) records, Shkreli donated $33,400 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), an organization that provides financial and other types of support to Democratic candidates running for U.S. Senate seats.

The DSCC, which is chaired by Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), should do the right thing and donate $33,400 to a charity, preferably one that supports research to find a cure for AIDS.

Reasons for signing

  • DSCC should consider the source of funds before accepting those funds. Shkreli is without question a despicable human being. Returning the money is therefore not an option. I suggest using the money to purchase Daraprim from the UK. It is manufactured by Glaxosmithkline, and sells for $2.51 at Canadadrugs.com. Then distribute the product free of charge to ADAP programs around the USA.
  • Send the money back to that sniveling POFS
  • We must get money out of politics!
