We seek relief, from the above listed parties, who are denying our right, to possess our own electronic devices, while we reside, in the Schwartz Next Step Employment Shelter. These personal possessions are not illegal, nor do they represent a threat, of any kind, and are necessary tools, in our search for housing and employment.
Why is this important?
The Schwartz Next Step Employment Shelter, under the management of the Volunteers Of America and Department of Homeless Services, is denying homeless clients entry, into the shelter, if they are, in possession, of any electrical or electronic devices. This includes, but not limited, to laptop computers, tablets, outlet adapters, extension cords. We are not to be, in possession of anything that requires electricity, with the exception, of a cell phone and charger. We have to go to the library in order to access the internet and information about housing and employment. We need to have those items that were purchased, by us, with our own money, and be allowed to use them, in the pursuit of happiness, as any free American citizen has the right to do. Being homeless and living, in a shelter is a difficult and trying experience, but it should not mean that your rights have to be taken from you, in order to live in a shelter.
