After almost 40 years since California adopted state building codes that require physical access in the "built environment" and 25 years since Congress passed and the President signed the Americans with Disabilities Act, people with disabilities are still struggling with physical barriers across the country.
Please join me in asking Congress, President Obama and our state legislature and governor to take action to assure that physical access for persons with disabilities becomes a reality.
Why is this important?
As a person with a disability who uses a wheelchair for mobility (I'm a paraplegic because of a fall in 1978), I experience physical barriers in both businesses I try to shop in and public buildings and facilities; barriers like damaged sidewalks, and lack of curb ramps in public buildings like city agency offices.
For over thirty years since my accident, I've had those experiences and have worked with others in an effort to remove those barriers.
