Don't Let Beacon Hill Rewrite Question 1 — Veto the So Called Transparency Bill

Veto The So Called Transparency Bill
Don't Let Beacon Hill Rewrite Question 1 -  Veto the So Called Transparency Bill

In 2024, Massachusetts voters made their voices heard. Through Question 1, they approved a measure granting the State Auditor the authority to audit the Legislature and bring greater transparency and accountability to Beacon Hill.

Now, the Legislature has passed a bill that many believe weakens and restricts that voter-approved mandate. Rather than fully implementing the will of the people, this legislation attempts to place new limitations on the very audits that voters authorized.

This is bigger than politics. It is about whether elected officials respect the outcome of a statewide vote.

When Massachusetts residents went to the ballot box, they were asked a simple question: Should the Legislature be subject to independent audits? The voters answered with a clear "yes." The response should be compliance, not reinterpretation.

Transparency builds trust. Accountability strengthens democracy. No branch of government should be exempt from meaningful oversight, especially when voters have explicitly demanded it.

Governor Healey now has an opportunity to defend the integrity of the ballot initiative process and uphold the will of the people. A veto would send a clear message that voter-approved laws cannot be diluted when they become inconvenient for those in power.

We, the undersigned, call for Governor Maura Healey to veto this legislation and preserve the full intent of Question 1 as approved by Massachusetts voters.

The people have already spoken. Beacon Hill should listen.

Why is this important?

Massachusetts voters overwhelmingly approved Question 1 by 72% to allow independent audits of the Legislature. This bill weakens that mandate. Tell Governor Healey to veto it and protect the will of the voters.
