Don't Dam the Skykomish River
Help send a clear message to Washington State officials: Save our Skykomish River!
PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION TO SAVE OUR SCENIC SKYKOMISH RIVER!
This targeted area, the South Fork of the Skykomish River, is one of only four Scenic Rivers designated for protection by the Washington State Legislature. In addition, this area has also been nominated to Congress for Federal Protection by the U.S Forest Service for its Outstanding Remarkable Values, which would be destroyed by this project.
Sunset Falls is in a Northwest Power and Conservation Council Protected Area from hydropower development because “such development would have major negative impacts that could not be reversed.”
Proposed site of power plant
The Skykomish River is home to ESA threatened Chinook (King) salmon and bull trout as well as threatened river otters, wild salmon, steelhead and other fish and wildlife, aquatic birds, raptors, and amphibians. The Skykomish River is one of the few remaining rivers in Washington State without a dam!
SnoPUD would have to condemn the longtime homes of residents and force them off their land, offering a fraction of what their property is worth to go through with their reckless plans. Please urge them to stop.
Please add your voice to urge the SnoPUD Board of Commissioners to Abandon the Sunset Falls Project!

Why is this important?
In a time when taxpayers are spending $325 million dollars to remove dams in Washington State due to the environmental devastation they cause, SnoPUD a local power company is planning to spend upwards of $150 million to erect a new dam on a river that has 4 levels of protection against dams. The project violates several environmental protections for rivers and clean water. Washington voters passed an initiative in 2006 (i937) to phase out hydropower in favor of renewable resources like wind, solar, geothermal, etc.. Washington State officials need to know SnoPUD must be held to same environmental restrictions as citizens, that we do not want any more dams, and SnoPUD must abandon the project immediately.
