DON’T TURN OUR COMMUNITY INTO A PRISON TOWN!

By my signature below I hereby declare to the Mayors, Commissioners and Councilmen of Pembroke Pines, Southwest Ranches and Broward County that I oppose any involvement in, or support of the construction of a new private 2000 bed immigrant detention facility because:

• This is not what we want for our community and our families. It will affect our quality of life and the nature of our rural communities.

• It is unclear how this project will benefit our community. There is already a women’s state prison near SR 27, we do not need another even more massive prison even closer to our homes.

• It will cause increased traffic, mass protests and could lower the value of our homes and our neighboring areas.

• CCA, a private prison company, has more than 10 pending lawsuits. It has been involved in cases regarding wrongful deaths, rape, child abuse and assaults. SW Ranches will become synonymous with the separation of families and the mistreatment of immigration detainees.

• Academic studies and journalist research of the prison industry reveal that private prisons hinder economic development in communities nationwide. Prisons deter the kinds of meaningful economic development that could diversity our local economy.

Why is this important?

Do you want to live down the street from a Detention Center? CCA is in the process of getting final approval for a massive 2000+ bed immigration detention center on 196th Avenue and Sheridan Street, literally blocks from our homes and schools. And all this WITHOUT any input from YOU.
