Dump Harry Reid
In 2007 the Democrats re-gained control of the Senate and Harry Reid became the Senate Majority Leader. In that time countless progressive legislation has been introduced but has been shot down because of the threat of a Republican filibuster.
And that is the precisely what has been happening. Republicans only THREATEN to filibuster. Rand Paul's recent filibuster of John Brennan was the real thing. He got up and argued the issue. Everyone remembers Strom Thrumonds famous filibuster. What people seem to forget is that the Civil Rights Bill did indeed pass.
This week the Senate voted on a bill that would expand criminal background checks for gun buyers. Over 90% of Americans agree with this and other gun control measures. Yet even though 54 members of the Senate voted in favor of the bill it was still defeated just because the Senate threatened to filibuster. Oh, and one of the 47 Senators who voted against the bill WAS HARRY REID!
It's time that the Senate Democrats have a leader who can inspire people and is willing to stand up to their empty threats. Who is willing to call Republicans out and hold firm. Someone who's interest lie with the people, not with keeping his cushy job.
Why is this important?
For too long Senate Republicans have threatened to filibuster legislation that the majority of Americans are in favor of. Rather then calling them on this threat Senate Majority leader has given in repeatedly. This weeks vote on Universal background checks is the last straw. We need a new Democratic Majority Leader in the Senate.
