End Corporal Punishment in the Education System

The time is now to end corporal punishment in our educational systems. Years of studies have proven the harmful effects this has on our children in their physical, emotional, and psychological development. I urge lawmakers, parents, caregivers, and citizens to make this change. It is time to stand up for the rights of our children to receive a education that is emotionally, physically, and physiologically safe. Alternative disciplinary actions have been known to assist with behavioral disorder and balance can be achieved with other methods. I call upon you to sign this petition and make the changes necessary to foster an environment for the love of learning and eradicating fear based education.

Why is this important?

For over a hundred years the method of corporal punishment has been used as a way to motivate students to perform better academically and maintain objectively good standards of behavior. The cost of this method has been studied extensively and proved to have long lasting negative effects. Many studies have shown that physical punishment — including spanking, hitting and other means of causing pain — can lead to increased aggression, antisocial behavior, physical injury and mental health problems for children.

As a mother of three children, one with special educational needs I have found the use of this method to be disheartening and completely unacceptable. The fear my child has in attending school where this method is used for simple infractions, cuts me to my core. To hear my children come home and relate their days to the feeling of being in prison is not what we desire their education to feel like.

I am ready to make a stand for all children in this way and assist in creating and cultivating an environment in which they desire to learn and be nurtured by their teachers and staff.
