End Gerrymandering

Gerrymandering (manipulating geographic lines to create partisan districts) should be illegal. Instead of voters choosing politicians, gerrymandering lets politicians choose voters.

To change and fix the practice of gerrymandering, we should call upon our states to establish non-partisan or bipartisan redistricting commissions comprised of non-office holding citizens.

The League of Women Voters and Common Cause endorse Citizen Redistricting Commissions.

Citizen Redistricting Commissions
(currently operating in 11 states) re-district with criteria such as:

•Compactness

•Preservation of communities of interest

•protection of minority voting rights

•electoral competition

The public would be better served making safe seats competitive. Safe seats contribute to polarization, over emphasis on primary challengers versus general elections, a disincentive to compromise, and overall government dysfunction.

Let's ask our states to establish Redistricting Commissions and by so doing enforce and strengthen the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and ensure the principle of “one person, one vote.”

Why is this important?

Because I believe gerrymandering makes our government less representative and is a threat to our democracy.
