In the United States, we have the highest incarceration rate in the world. According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics 2,266,800 adults were incarcerated in U.S. federal and state prisons in 2009.
The policy of keeping nonviolent offenders in prison for life is barbaric and does nothing to improve society. It is a costly burden on taxpayers.
When reading about the lifetime mandatory minimum that Timothy Tyler received, I was sickened. Congress, act now! We are tired of seeing other Americans' lives thrown away and our taxes wasted.
