End the Electoral College
It is time to end the electoral college system and elect our Presidents through direct, one person, one vote. This long obsolete feature of our system has the effect of disenfranchising the majority of Americans who are in either safe Democratic or safe Republican states. Our presidential elections are now decided by voters in maybe 10 states. This flies in the face of democracy. We need a constitutional amendment that calls for presidential elections to be decided by the popular vote of the entire electorate. Whether you are a Republican in New York State or a Democrat in Alabama--your vote should count. This will open up our deadlocked system to more political parties too. It will force candidates to pay attention to the voters in EVERY state, not just the "swing states."
Why is this important?
Electing the President of the United States by direct one person, one vote. Ending the outdated electoral college system which in effect, disenfranchises the majority of Americans who are in either safe Democratic or safe Republican states. Our presidential elections are decided by maybe 10 states. This flies in the face of democracy. There are several ways to do this, constitutional amendment, or through the state legislatures who would vote to apportion their electors. It is absurd to maintain the electoral college. It serves no useful purpose except to preserve a two party system that is not working.
