The US Postal Service is the only business or government agency required to prefund their retiree benefits 75 years in advance. At a cost of $5.5 billion dollars a year for a 10 year period. This needs to stop immediately. It is bankrupting a 235 year old quasi government/quasi business. The financial problems of the postal service are "smoke and mirrors" created by Congress in the lame duck session during 2006 by a voice vote.
Why is this important?
The United States has had one of the best, if not the best postal service in the entire world. When I was a girl, I even had my savings in a postal account! This Christmas, while UPS failed, Priority Mail got my packages coast to coast in record time. I don't want to see our country rely solely on private services, available only to sophisticated urban communities. Save our postal service!
