Fair healthcare for transgenders

The APA defines transgender as "an umbrella term for persons whose gender identity, gender expression, or behavior does not conform to that typically associated with the sex to which they were assigned at birth. Gender identity refers to a person’s internal sense of being male, female, or something else; gender expression refers to the way a person communicates gender identity to others through behavior, clothing, hairstyles, voice, or body characteristics."

Transgenders face discrimination in nearly every aspect of their life. The healthcare they are ineligible for is just one aspect of this discrimination. Most insurance companies will not treat anything related to transgender therapy. The expensive sex reassignment surgery, hysterectomy, breast reduction, breast enhancement, hair removal or other treatments deemed necessary by their therapists are unilaterally denied. These are treatments that are doctor recommended as necessary for the well being of the person being treated, yet insurance companies get to choose to ignore this because transgenders are not accepted members of society.

This needs to stop. Tell insurance companies that they need to treat each individual as their doctor prescribes, not how they choose.

Why is this important?

Most transgenders in the US are denied prescribed healthcare because most insurance companies specifically state that they will not treat anything related to being transgender.
