Fight Environmental Racism

Environmental Racism is defined as "any policy, practice, or directive that negatively affects (whether intended or unintended) individuals, groups, or communities based on race or color. Environmental racism is a form of environmental injustice" (Professor Robert D. Bullard). Congress needs to make efforts to prevent industry from taking advantage of communities of Color. Here are the proposed efforts to be made by Congress.
1. The EPA should conduct research to determine the safest distance for residency in proximity to industrial sites, waste management sites, and factories and create laws prohibiting a breach of this safe distance.
2. Soils, vegetation, air, and water surrounding industrial sites, waste management sites, and factories should be tested frequently for any harmful chemicals attributed to runoff with submitted reports of their findings to determine if the runoff is dangerous. If so, the producing sites of the runoff would need to be monitored and responsible for remedying a fix to stop the polluting runoff.
3. All persons affected by environmental disaster should receive equal aid by the government; aid referring to any monetary aid, shelter, medical services, and any services offered for relief.

Why is this important?

This petition is about bringing environmental change while helping stop the unethical attack of industry on communities of color. As an Environmental Student also interest in Human Rights Abuse, I have created this petition to urge Congress to make greater efforts in stopping not only environmental abuse but environmental abuse specifically targeted at Non-White Hispanic communities, a blatant human rights abuse.
-Climate Change effects low income and communities of color disproportionately greater than that of non-white Hispanic communities.
- hazardous waste sites and industrial facilities are located more frequently in communities of color
-children of color are more likely to be affected by lead poisoning
