FIGHT FOR $15

A higher minimum wage means more money in the pockets of those earning at or near the minimum, potentially lifting them out of poverty.

Raising the federal minimum wage will also stimulate consumer spending, help businesses' bottom lines, and grow the economy. A modest increase would improve worker productivity, and reduce employee turnover and absenteeism. It would also boost the overall economy by generating increased consumer demand.

Worker Protection

Modern-day advocates of the minimum wage make similar arguments: Employees who receive adequate compensation are better able to clothe, house and feed themselves and their families. Minimum wage laws are also perceived as necessary to protect workers from exploitation by unscrupulous employers.

If the people earning the minimum wage are heads of low-income households, higher minimum wages are likely to reduce poverty. If low-income workers lose jobs and cannot find jobs because of a higher minimum wage, social safety nets for low-income households can protect against increased poverty.

Summarize the reasons some economists support a higher minimum wage. These economists argue that (i) there will be a relatively small number of job losses, and (ii) those who have jobs will have higher wages. As a result, the benefits of higher wages outweigh the costs of lost jobs.

Position: Minimum Wage Does Not Increase Inflation

Historically, minimum wage increases have had only a very weak association with inflationary pressures on prices in an economy.

People who live on a minimum-wage salary can benefit from creating and sticking to a budget, finding ways to cut costs, knowing about financial assistance programs, and finding a trusted online bank offering zero account fees, no balance or deposit minimums, and no service charges. Feb 14, 2023.

The benefits of gradually phasing in a $15 minimum wage by 2025 would be far-reaching, lifting pay for tens of millions of workers and helping reverse decades of growing pay inequality. Gradually raising the federal minimum wage to $15 by 2025 would lift pay for 32 million workers—21% of the U.S. workforce. Jan 26, 2021

Why is this important?

Because people are making ends meet and everything in stores, restaurants is rising their prices to make their ends meet. Also to prevent and reduce poverty. Increasing the minimum wage can offer several benefits for workers and the economy, including reducing poverty and income inequality, stimulating consumer spending, and boosting productivity. A higher minimum wage can also lead to improved employee retention and better health outcomes.
A $15 minimum wage could help workers meet emergency expenses.
Wages that allow workers to afford the necessities are a crucial component to growing the middle class.
