Replace Confederate battle anthem for Maryland!
Lyrics of the current State Song, "Maryland, My Maryland," are divisive and ugly mementos of the Civil War Confederacy which call for fighting "Northern scum" and demonize President Abe Lincoln. Let's replace this inappropriate and hurtful song with something that ALL Marylanders can support and feel proud to hear!
Why is this important?
As a transplanted Marylander (since 1989), I only recently became aware of the offensive lyrics to our State Song when legislators moved to take the Confederate flag off of state-issued license plates. I was appalled by the pro-Confederacy lyrics, which should have no place in our state's officialdom. They are rarely sung and hardly anyone knows of them, but still they are on record for our state, and presumably sung sometimes and/or studied by school kids. It's time to let go of this anomaly - this is divisive and hurtful to so many- and find a song to represent and unite all Marylanders - a song we can all be proud to sing!
