Dear Legislator,
This session I hope that you will co-sponsor Representative Atkins and Senator Eldridge's "We the People Act" HD1988 which once again calls for Congress to propose an amendment to the U.S. Constitution affirming that:
- Congress and the states can limit campaign spending and
- Makes clear that corporations are not people with constitutional rights.
Then if Congress does not propose an amendment within 6 months, this legislation petitions for a convention to propose amendments to the Constitution by the state legislatures. California, Vermont, and Illinois have already called for these actions and I think Massachusetts should be next.
This legislation is an opportunity for our Commonwealth to be a leader in the fight for fair elections. I hope it has your support.
Why is this important?
It's been 5 years since the Citizens United Supreme Court decision and big money continues to have a negative impact on our democracy. The Massachusetts Legislature has taken some significant steps in addressing this problem but we must do more. Please join me in writing your state legislators today.
