Instead of giving tickets to pedestrians for walking in the streets, property owners should be ticketed for breaking the law and failing to clear the snow from sidewalks.
Why is this important?
Before a single snow flake fell, D.C. officials announced that they wouldn't enforce the law requiring property owners to shovel sidewalks and keep them free of snow.
But now that sidewalks have become dangerous and impassable, the police are threatening to ticket anyone who walks in the streets. Councilmember Jack Evans even wrote that "if you can't travel on sidewalks, then stay inside."
It's absurd to force carless D.C. residents to choose between staying inside for weeks and risking their lives on icy sidewalks.
