Give FIU Early Voting on Campus

FIU friends and neighbors,
Election Day is less than two months away, but Miami-Dade County election officials still have not planned an early voting site for the nearly 57,000 students and over 9,000 faculty and staff on FIU’s campus. Early voting in the two weeks before an election lets voters beat the long lines, weather problems, and traffic that often make life tough on voters. A federal court recently found that Florida state officials had engaged in voter suppression by refusing to let students across Florida vote on the campuses where they often live, work, and study.
After the court’s decision, some county election officials quickly made plans to allow early voting for the students at University of Florida, Florida State University, University of Central Florida, and University of South Florida. But for some reason, FIU has been ignored. Our university is one of the largest and most diverse in the nation and we deserve to be heard.
We are asking Mayor Gimenez and Miami-Dade County election officials to work with the FIU administration to provide an early voting site on FIU’s campus. The tens of thousands of FIU students, alumni, faculty, staff and administration deserve to have convenient access to an early voting site. Join us by signing this petition and let our elected officials know that we need their support.
Sabrina Priestley is the Vice-President of the FIU College Democrats.
Andres Solorzano is the President of the FIU College Republicans.

Why is this important?
When it comes to voting, partisan politics should not matter. FIU students and faculty should be able to vote at a convenient location on campus. Other universities across the state will have early voting on their campuses, but FIU has been left out. We are asking Mayor Gimenez, Miami-Dade election officials, and FIU to work together to let our FIU community vote on campus.
