Governor Brown, Enforce California Rental Laws
"Security Deposits" are becoming the new "Profit Margin." High deposits (sometimes as much as twice the monthly rent) are routinely charged to those that can least afford it. Later, when the tenant is forced to move in order to find employment, property managers and owners attach any number of fees and interest to the "security deposit." An unemployed, or underemployed family cannot afford to lose money simply to line the pockets of the property manager. But, in order to argue, the tenant is often required to spend the time and money necessary to file a claim in Small Claims Court. Let's make landlords more accountable for their actions. Let's make them follow the law with a simple complaint to the courts instead of forcing people who cannot afford it, defend themselves in court.
Why is this important?
California's Foreclosure Rate is surpassed only by the state of Nevada. Add to that the current rate of bankruptcy in this state is the nation's fifth highest. Where do all these displaced homeowners go? To rental units, if they can.
