Governor Brown, Protect Immigrants By Signing the California Values Act (SB 54) into Law!

The California Values Act (SB 54) will help protect immigrant communities across the state from Trump's cruel deportation machine. With this bill, immigrant communities across California will have added protections against ICE's abusive new tactics which enlist police and sheriffs as deportation officers.

We call on Governor Brown to sign the California Values Act and send a powerful message to Washington and across the nation that California will lead the fight against Trump’s racist, xenophobic agenda.

If signed into law, the California Values Act will prohibit several painful tactics that ICE uses to turn police and sheriffs into deportation agents, and it will limit several others.

Local law enforcement should not act as Trump's deportation force. Such Police-ICE entanglement further undermines the community’s trust in law enforcement and leads to serious abuses.

Immigrants are a vital and inseparable part of our communities. We can and must stand up to xenophobic bigots who recklessly target our community members. We urge Governor Brown to sign the California Values Act to build upon the TRUST Act and TRUTH Act in California.

Signing SB 54 will be an important step forward. At the same time, we recognize that California has more work to do to fully embrace the humanity and dignity of every person who calls our state home, and are committed to fighting for the inclusion of people criminalized by racially biased systems of mass incarceration.

As Californians, let's embrace our values of compassion and equality, not anti-immigrant hate and separation of communities.

Why is this important?

The Trump administration has launched a concerted anti-immigrant agenda since day one. In order to fulfill its xenophobic vision, they need local law enforcement to act as deportation officers. California must take a stand against such attacks and protect those who call this state their home. Disentangling local law enforcement and ICE is one important step to take in order to protect our communities against Trump's deportation machine.
