Greenville, SC: Rename Wade Hampton Blvd. and Wade Hampton HS

Wade Hampton III was one of South Carolina's largest slaveholders of his time, a traitor to the USA who served as a lieutenant general in the confederate army. Yet the city of Greenville, South Carolina continues to commemorate this evil legacy by naming a major thoroughfare and large public high school after him.

Why is this important?

Wade Hampton III was one of South Carolina's largest slaveholders of his time, a traitor to the USA who served as a lieutenant general for the confederacy, and a staunch supporter of the Red Shirts (a 19th Century paramilitary group that used violence and terrorism as a part of the South Carolina Jim Crow culture of the day). Continuing to honor this post-Civil War white supremacist is racist and cannot be tolerated. Some suggestions for action might be to change the name of Wade Hampton High School to Reverend Joseph Armstrong DeLaine High School and to change the name of Wade Hampton Boulevard to Robert Smalls Boulevard.
